| Garlic & Your Heart A study released in the Oct. 16th , 2007 issue of the prestigious medical journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that garlic causes red blood cells to release hydrogen sulfide in the body thereby causing blood vessels to relax.
When blood vessels relax, they become larger and are able to carry more blood and more oxygen to the brain and other important parts of the body. Blood pressure also comes down when blood vessels relax. It is well known that high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, so this newly discovered health benefit of garlic, once again, is an example of modern day researchers confirming the wisdom of the ancients. Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes throughout all of recorded history.
The lead researcher is Biology professor David Kraus from the University of Alabama. He said that there is also another study in progress that shows "sulfide can protect from cardiovascular damage during a heart attack, it can alleviate various sorts of inflammation, and it can reduce platelet aggregation that would cause a blood clot to form".
When you eat garlic, your body metabolizes garlic's active ingredient, allicin, and produces hydrogen sulphide. The hydrogen sulphide then signals your blood vessels to relax, increasing blood flow, reducing blood pressure and supporting heart health.
In another study, Dr. Arun Bordia of Tagore Medical College discovered that garlic helped patients suffering from heart disease recover from heart attacks. In his study of 432 patients, half of the group ate two to three cloves of garlic a day for three years and the other half ate no garlic at all. After the first year, the results of the study showed no difference in the rate of heart attacks between the two groups. However, in the second year the death rate among garlic eaters was 50 percent lower than the no garlic group and in the third year it had dropped 66 percent! There were also fewer non-fatal heart attacks. Non-fatal heart attacks were down 30 percent in the second year and 60 percent in the third year in the garlic eating group. Garlic eaters also experienced fewer chest pains and had lowered their blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels by 10 percent!

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain. It's estimated that about 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, including 4.9 million people age 65 and older. The Alzheimer's Association predicts that by 2050, the number of people age 65 and over with Alzheimer's could range from 11 million to 16 million. So what can you do about it?
An article published in the St. Petersburg Times suggests that a woman improved her husband's Alzhimer's symptoms by using coconut oil. Dr. Mary Newport had slowly watched Steve, her husband, start to show signs of Alzheimer's.
